Have you ever told someone "I'm so glad you're my avocado"?

That's just how it sometimes goes in Mexico, and San Miguel de Allende resident Carol Merchasin, (author, recovering lawyer, trainer and speaker) is more than glad to share the bumps, bruises and embarrassments that come with settling down in a city where one in five things makes sense.

About How it goes in Mexico…

The idea of living in Mexico is for many, either a highly romanticized dream or a nightmare fraught with health and safety issues. In this series of essays on how it really goes in Mexico, Carol gives us an often rollicking and sometimes poignant account of her ex-patriot household in San Miguel de Allende.
From the inevitable and often humorous mistakes in speaking Spanish, to up close and surprising encounters with Mexican health care, from elegant Mexican customs to indefensible poverty, we are taken on an affectionate and insightful tour of the small moments of a life and culture far different from that north of the border.
Whether you are one of the millions of Americans who are wondering if they too could or should retire in Mexico, or you are a traveler of this important southern neighbor, or you simply enjoy reading about life in other lands, you will enjoy How it goes in Mexico.

Who is Carol Merchasin?

Carol Merchasin is a recovering lawyer, trainer, speaker and author. She came to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 2006, fulfilling her lifelong dream of living where she could understand only about 20% of what goes on around her. So far, the dream is a reality, although the percentages vary from day to day.
Her forthcoming book, "How it goes in Mexico," is a compilation of personal essays on the Small Moments that make a day, define a life and build relationships in San Miguel. The Big Moments, like arguing before the Supreme Court, singing the Star Spangled Banner at a major sporting event and bringing democracy to the Middle East, she will leave to others. She lives happily in San Miguel thanks to her husband, Señor Roberto, their three dogs, two birds and a lot of Mexican people.
